Border Women secure fourth successive home final
Border on Saturday secured their fourth successive home Final in the SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Competition as the finalists of the A and B Sections were confirmed in an exciting close to pool stages.
Border will line up against Western Province in the A Section final at the BCM Stadium in East London on 17 September, while the Golden Lions will meet Free State in the B Section final, which will be played as a curtain raiser to the main final.
Border secured the top spot on the log standings with a convincing 47-10 victory against Eastern Province in East London, while Western Province defeated the Blue Bulls 12-5 in Cape Town to book their place in the Final.
In the other A Section match, KwaZulu-Natal thumped SWD 86-0 in Durban.
In the B Section the Golden Lions extended their unbeaten run to four matches as they beat the Pumas 24-10 in Johannesburg, while Free State registered a memorable 110-14 victory against the Griffons to advance to the final.
The battle between Boland and Griquas, meanwhile, was tight, with Boland edging the Kimberley side 22-20 in Wellington, while the Leopards finished their season on a high note with a 34-20 victory against the Valke in Kempton Park.
The A Section Final will mark a repeat of the 2013 final, which Border won 41-8. But the match is expected to be thrilling as Western Province handed Border their first defeat in three seasons in the third round of the tournament compliments of a narrow 7-5 victory in East London.
Border were in fine form in their clash against Eastern Province this weekend as they ran in an impressive nine tries, which included two each from flanker Nomaphelo Mayongo and replacement prop Siphokazi Soxujwa, to only two by Eastern Province flanker Aseze Hele, while Western Province scored two tries to one by the Blue Bulls for their 12–7 victory.
