Bowe scores as Ireland defeat England
Tommy Bowe scored a late try to give Ireland a 20-16 win over England on Saturday and keep alive his country’s faint hopes of retaining its Six Nations title.
Jonny Wilkinson had just kicked England into the lead for the first time at 16-13 when Bowe broke the defensive line from a simple lineout move to score his second try of the match.
Keith Earls also touched down at Twickenham to help Ireland recover from its 33-10 loss at France two weeks ago. Dan Cole scored England’s only try midway through the first half as the home side slumped to its first defeat despite an improved performance.
Ireland and England each have four points in the standings, two fewer than Grand Slam-chasing France.
Prop John Hayes became only the 12th player in rugby union history to win 100 caps for his country – and the first from Ireland – when he took the field against England.
