Brisbane Global Rugby Tens Day 1 Wrap
The St.George Queensland Reds endured a tough start to the second edition of the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens, suffering losses to the Blues and Melbourne Rebels on Day 1 of the tournament at Suncorp Stadium.
The Reds fell 29-7 to the Blues in their first match of the tournament, but looked certain to notch their first win of the day in their second match against the Melbourne Rebels – only to lose 21-17 after the Victorians scored a try after full time to steal the win.
The Reds resume pool play first thing tomorrow, taking on the Panasonic Wild Knights from Japan at 1:08pm.
Reds assistant coach Paul Carozza said: “We’re obviously really disappointed to finish the first day without a win. We thought our boys put their heart into it, but we probably made just a few too many silly mistakes.
“The guys were physical and worked hard for each other, so there’s some positives to take from it.”
The Queensland Women suffered a 19-5 loss to NSW Women in their first match, but bounced back in resounding fashion with a 33-0 win over the Brumbies Women in their final match of the first day.
The Queensland Women’s final pool match is against the Rebels Women tomorrow at 4:02pm.
Queensland Women head coach Michael Hayes said: “It was a nice turnaround. We came in with a game plan and just needed the girls to embrace it.
“We had a bit of soul searching after that loss to the Waratahs, but the girls took accountability for their performance in the first game and delivered really well in the second.
“We were really pleased to keep the Brumbies to zero. They did a great job.”
