The Toyota Cheetahs and the Lions’ deserved break from Vodacom SupeRugby this weekend had a knock-on effect on South Africans featuring among the best in terms of the stats.

South African players were on top in two of positive Vodacom Rugby Stats App categories with Cell C Sharks centre Frans Steyn and DHL Stormers flanker Siya Kolisi taking the spoils.

Steyn has been in commanding form this season and is clearly enjoying his rugby again under director of rugby Jake White.   The imposing figure is not only a dangerous weapon on attack through his powerful runs and canon-like boot but as they stats suggest he is equally good at forcing the turnovers.

Steyn has won three turnovers the past weekend and is equal with team-mate Jean Deysel,  Stormers centre Juan de Jongh, Liaki Moli of the Blues and the Chiefs’ Tanerau Latimer

Kolisi put his body on the line for the Stormers over the weekend and made 18 tackles in their match against the Reds to share the weekend’s lead with the Brumbies’ Jarrad Butler.

Shortly on their heels is Kolisi’s team-mate Nizaam Carr, who made 17 tackles with Michael Hooper (Waratahs) and the Rebels’ Mitch Inman were equal on 16.

Vodacom Bulls stalwart Victor Matfield is showing the youthful form that belies his age and has proven that he is still the master of the lineouts.  He is second in the lineouts won on own throw category – one short of the Hurricanes’ Jeremy Thrush, who took eight in the seventh round.

The Cell C Sharks’ Stephan Lewies has adapted well to the pressures of Vodacom SupeRugby and was instrumental for his team in the lineouts. The 22-year-old took six lineouts along with Jake Shcatz of the Reds and the Blues’ Steven Luatua.

In his first start for the Cell C Sharks, flyhalf Fred Zeilinga turned in a flawless kicking performance contributing 19 points to his side’s victory over the Waratahs.  His efforts earned him second place in the points category for the weekend with Jason Woodward leading for the 27 points he amassed for the Rebels.

Vodacom Bulls flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter is also having a massive influence with his boot also scoring 19 points over the weekend.
