Christchurch teens ‘kicking-it’ with Crusaders heroes
Rising young rugby stars from Springston and Wainoni enjoyed ‘kicking-it’ with their Crusaders heroes Owen Franks, Willi Heinz and Wyatt Crockett at an action-packed training session yesterday.
The Crusaders players ran footy practice for two local rugby teams – the Springston Under 16s and Wainoni’s Celebration Lions Under 14s – thanks to a PlaceMakers in-store competition.
Tackling the practice session at the Crusaders’ own training field, Rugby Park in St Albans, both teams agreed that super-charging their skills with the local stars was a season highlight.
Springston Captain Brennan Clarke said “We played a new game called ‘Passback’ which was heaps of fun, and it was great to pick up different ideas from the Crusaders. I definitely learnt a lot.”
Crusaders prop Wyatt Crockett was also in high spirits, having taken the teens through a variety of exercise drills.
“It was good to have a kick around with the young guys and teach them a few tricks of the game. They gave the session 100 per cent and, who knows, there may be a future Crusader among them,” he said.
The Super Rugby Skills Training day was made possible through PlaceMakers’ official Community Partnership with the Crusaders.
Chief Executive John Beveridge said PlaceMakers is proud to support New Zealand rugby at both a professional and grassroots level.
“It was great to see the love of the game shared across the different levels of play. All the players had a great time kicking the ball around, and we’re happy to have been able to bring that together.”
