Crusaders coaches Todd Blackadder, Dave Hewett, Tabai Matson and Aaron Mauger will put their creative and building skills to the test tomorrow to help launch ‘Canstruction®’ – the Christchurch City Mission’s new can collection initiative.

The coaches will provide a taste of what the Canstruction® event will entail, by competing with each other to create the best structure they can using only cans of food.

City Missioner Michael Gorman will adjudicate the launch event and says he has no doubt the Crusaders coaches will provide some inspiration for those considering taking part in the event.

“I know that this is a naturally very competitive bunch of men, so we are expecting them to go all out with their constructions. As well as being very entertaining though, we are just grateful to the Crusaders for helping to launch and increase awareness of this exciting new event,” Mr Gorman said.

“The Christchurch City Mission Foodbank provides over 26,000 food packages per year to members of the local community; and donations of non-perishable and canned foods is essential to the operation of this service. This year we have got on board with Canstruction®, an international non-profit organisation that has introduced fun can collection events in over 215 cities worldwide. We hope that the unique and entertaining aspects of this initiative will help to bring more awareness and more donations than ever before so that we can continue to lend a supporting hand to those discarded, abandoned or overlooked by our society.”

Canstruction® is a design and build competition that uses canned food as building materials to create massive 3D structures. For the Christchurch event, the Ellerslie International Flower Show will be the venue for the structures to be built and displayed. At the completion of the display period the structures will be dismantled and all of the food items used to build the structures will be donated to the Christchurch City Mission.
