Currie Cup back in Cape Town

Western Province are the 2014 Currie Cup winners.
Demetri Catrakilis contributed 14 points on the day to win the Man of the match award. WP number 8, Nizaam Carr was also a strong contender. As was Jaco Van der Walt who was outstanding for the Lions.
The WP flyhalf slotted a penalty to put his side into the lead after 4 minutes. The sharpshooter added another 3 points 6 minutes later taking the home side to a 6 – 0 lead.
Boshoff got his chance to put the Lions on the board with 14 minutes gone but he was unsuccessful. The Lions Stalwart missed his 2nd attempt at poles 18 minutes later.
Jaco Taute went over to score with 5min to go in the first half. The centre making amens for a previous chance which went abegging. Catrakilis adding the extras.
The Lions made it tough for WP at scrum time putting them under pressure in this department for most of the game. This led to the Lions 3rd kickable penalty which Combrink missed.
The teams headed into the shed at half time with the home side leading 13 – 0.
The Lions weren’t good enough in the first forty but showed composure in the second half to put 16 points past Wp.
Boshoff finally got the Lions onto the board early in the third quarter after another scrum penalty against WP.
Van der Walt, who was superb on the day, crossed the whitewash 50 minutes in after a brilliant break by Ross Cronje. Boshoff was successful with the conversion narrowing the gap to 13 – 10.
Boshoff leveled the scores 8 minutes later after Joubert pensalised WP for not strumming straight.
Caterikilis struck back straight away restoring his sides 3 point lead.Caterikilis was called on to take another penalty with 65 minutes gone on the clock.
The Flyhalf didn’t disappoint keeping up his perfect kicking record and extending his sides lead to 19-13.
Combrink slotted a long range penalty with 5 minutes to go.
In the last minute of the game with the scores at 19 – 16 Boshoff took a shot at goal, which would have leveled the scores taking the final into extra time. This was not to be.
The home side secured a 19 -16 win over the Johannesburg outfit.
Missed kicked made the biggest difference on a day were the sides were very evenly matched.
