CUT go down to Maties in Stellenbosch
Maties embrace a conservative second half performance to send CUT back to Bloem with no points, final score 40-0.
With the new try points system it is believed to allow the fans to be entertained to some running and attacking rugby. However it was the first half four tries from the home side that set the platform for the Stellenbosch clash.
The visitors coming close at times in the match, the defence of the three-time Varsity Cup champions holding out firmly.
Speaking to Maties first team manager, Fredri Gunter before the match he believed that they will be a force to be reckoned with. Finishing in the 5th last position in last year’s competition, they have a point to prove.
“We will be aiming for number one spot come end of 2016. Nothing less than that,” Gunter added.
The frail second half attacking structure from the Maties saw them only bag one try for the greater part of the second stanza.
Fancy footwork and a brilliant display of pace saw veteran Varsity Cup star, Craig Barry, put newcomer Edwill van der Merwe into space and score the first 7-point try for the Maties as the home side held onto possession from the outside their own 22.
The atmosphere certainly has lived up to the new approach from Varsity Sports to embrace the “Sportainment” culture.
