Dazel pleased with SA Women’s Select Sevens effort
Springbok Women’s Sevens coach, Renfred Dazel, on Sunday applauded the effort of the SA Women’s Select side in an invitational tournament played in Paris and Marcoussis this weekend.
The South Africans played against Brazil and the French national A and B sides in a round-robin tournament, and Dazel was pleased with the exposure to high level competition his side enjoyed.
Dazel’s team won all three matches against Brazil, with a 24-14 victory on Sunday at the French Rugby Federation headquarters in Marcoussis to build on a 19-14 victory against the Olympic Games hosts on Saturday and a 14-5 victory in their opening match on Friday.
The South African’s, however, came up short against France A and France B respectively, going down 26-0 against France A on Sunday and 24-14 on Friday, and 26-0 against France B on Saturday.
Despite this, Dazel said they learned valuable lessons in the process.
“It was tough playing six matches in three days, but this is what it is like when you play on the circuit as well,” said the coach. “We battled today (Sunday) as we only had eight fit players left when we faced the French A side and I could not really rotate any players.
“We played well in the first half against France, but we fell away in the second half as the fresh legs disappeared.
“Overall though, the tournament was worth our while, as we now have a better idea about where we are as a team.”
The SA Select Women will participate in the Roma Sevens in June and Dazel will have the luxury of calling on a number of players recovering from injury.
“Libbie Janse van Rensburg will be out of action for a few of weeks due to injury and Zenay Jordaan will need to have a knee scan when we return, but I am confident that we will be able to compete well in the Rome event.”
The Springbok Women’s Sevens are still awaiting confirmation of the qualification route to the 2016/2017 World Rugby Women’s Sevens series.
