De Jager striking fear in the opposition
Vodacom Rugby App Review – Round 3 – Rugby World Cup
8 OCTOBER 2015 – South Africa’s baby-faced assassin Lood de Jager has been a revelation so far at the Rugby World Cup and was again in thrilling form in the Springboks’ victory over Scotland over the weekend.
The Springboks continued their upward curve following their shocking first-round defeat to Japan with two consecutive wins.
De Jager, who was named man of the match in their 34-16 victory over Scotland, was among the top performers in the fourth round at the global showpiece.
The towering lock was equally demolishing with the ball as he was without it, striking fear in the eyes of the Scottish.
De Jager, along with fellow South African lock Eben Etzebeth, cracked the top-five rankings for the amount of Carries they made in the match.
They made 13 each while Scotland’s David Denton and Vunga Lilo topped the category with 15 carries apiece.
On defence De Jager was also full value with the 16 tackles he made for a share of third place in the rankings with four other players.
The top spot went to the Scottish duo of Blair Cowan and Richie Gray, who made 21 tackles each.
De Jager also fulfilled his lock duties winning five lineouts on South Africa’s throw which placed him fourth along with six players from other nations.
While few individual South African players cracked the top rankings on the Vodacom Rugby App’s statistics, the team proved effective as a unit.
The 19 points that Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard scored was the third most of the round with Australia’s Bernard Foley (28) and Nicolas Sanchez of Argentina with 25 ahead of him.
Pollard slotted two conversion kicks, four penalty conversions and a drop goal to take his total to 38 for the tournament which ranks him fourth overall while Sanchez is in first place with 51 points.
South Africa’s total of 131 carries against Scotland was the fifth best in the fourth round while they were also fifth in terms of Lineouts stolen (2), Tries (3) and Try Assists (2).
The team will be looking to improve on their discipline conceding 11 penalties which was the eighth most in the round.
In their three matches the Springboks have conceded the third most penalties of all the teams with 38 calls going against them.
