DHL Western Province Under-21 team to take on the Golden Lions on 30 August 2012

DHL Western Province Under-21 coach John Dobson has announced his team to face the Golden Lions at DHL Newlands on Saturday (kick-off 16h45).

Fresh from his team’s bonus-point clinching 31-17 win over Border last Saturday, Dobson has been forced into a few changes – due to injuries and senior team call-ups – ahead of what he has termed a crucial match.

“We’ve been disrupted a bit, losing Damian de Allende again to the senior team and with an injury-worry or two, but we’re lucky to (still) call upon two SA Under-21 players in Kobus van Wyk and Pat Howard,” said Dobson.

“The Lions are a much better team than their results would suggest and they’ll be keen to set the record straight after we beat them in the first round.

“Our team has changed a bit since that first Lions match, losing Scarra Ntubeni, Wilhelm van der Sluys, Mikey van der Spuy and Damian… so this will be a challenging game and a crucial one at that. We would dearly love a home semifinal, and we’re just three points behind the Sharks (in second place), so we need to keep the pressure on them with a win.”

With last week’s match – against Border – having been played at City Park, Dobson and his charges are looking forward to making a return to DHL Newlands this Saturday; their first game there since early last month.

“Hopefully the weather will play ball too,” added the DHL WP U21 coach. “Last week’s conditions tested us in all facets, yet we still got the bonus point, so we’re hoping for some better weather back at DHL Newlands.”

DHL Western Province Under-19 team to take on the Golden Lions on 30 August 2012

Nazeem Adams, the DHL Western Province Under-19 coach, has announced his team to take on the Golden Lions at DHL Newlands on Saturday (kick-off 14h45).

With the DHL WP U19 side well-placed in second position on the log, coach Adams is looking forward to starting the second half of the 2012 Under-19 provincial season on a high.

The U19s lost just one match in the first half of the season – going down in the last minute away from home – and their coach declared himself happy with proceedings up till now.

“It was important to be within that top two at the halfway mark,” said Adams, “as that determines whether or not you get a home semifinal.

“We’ve also managed a five-point gap between ourselves and the third-placed team, so we will need to build on that over the coming weeks to ensure home-ground advantage.”

Aside from a potential home semifinal, Adams has also been working hard on creating depth in his squad – having made a whole host of changes for last week’s game against the SWD Eagles; DHL WP’s juniors winning 55-11 in wet conditions at City Park.

Said Adams: “The positive to come out of Saturday was that we played with our forwards a lot more; they took charge and they dominated. I was very happy with that.

“As a bonus, we didn’t pick up any injuries and a guy like Johnny Kotze came through his comeback game (his first match in four months) well.

“We gave everyone an opportunity at some point during the first half of the season, which has also been a massive boon, and hopefully it will serve us well in the remaining weeks.”
