Dubai Sevens: Reaction
Colin Gregor, Scotland captain (after victory over Australia): “It is nice to get the win. It is a cliche but we have been training hard at home and come out and down what we’ve been working on which is great. It’s certainly good to be back.”
Ben Ryan, Fiji coach (Cup quarter finalists): “It was close, started well, but we went a bit passive in defence and Canada put us under real pressure. A little bit of a get out of jail there. I am looking forward to seeing how the match with England goes. It was 26-10 in the Gold Coast, will the gap wider, will it go narrower, I am looking forward to it.”
New Zealand’s Tim Mikkelson (Cup quarter finalists): “Our first game we didn’t start that well and got better as it went on so we wanted to start better here and I think we did that. I have never won here, so it would be good to do so.”
Kenya captain Andrew Amonde, on reaching the Cup quarter finals: “We are trying hard. The boys are really catching up and adapting to the South African style of play of our new coach. We are relaxed because we are taking everything one step at a time.”
Carlin Isles, USA Sevens and Keep Rugby Clean ambassador: “It feels good, it is a blessing to come back here, especially to a tournament where I made my name. So I am ready. We now need to recoup, go over the little things we didn’t do right, execute it, forget that game and come back to the next one. It is a privilege to be part of Keep Rugby Clean. It is a clean sport right here and I feel really honored.”
Marcus Watson, England Sevens (after 28-5 win over USA): “I was a bit gutted to not be involved in Australia so got to do everything to stay in the squad. We are focussed more on defence which has shown, but we still need to improve, but I think it is showing so far.”
Ed Jenkins, Australia captain, after beating Spain: “It was a disappointing start, quite similar to the Gold Coast to be fair. We bounced back then and hopefully we can bounce back today. Huge game against Wales now, I think we need to fix up our defence hopefully our attack takes care of itself as we saw there. We are fielding a strong side, probably one of the strongest we’ve fielded, so I guess Wales will be the test.”
Mike Ellery, England Sevens, on claims he is the second fastest in the squad: “There were a few injuries at the time and I had just come back from a few weeks in Thailand so I was bit lighter.
On watching his sister playing in the Women’s tournament: “I have never watched her play in the flesh, so looking forward to seeing more of her. We watched some of their matches on TV last night, a very proud brother.”
