Elton Jantjies nails Sharks
The MTN Golden Lion secured their position on the top of the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup log after they beat The Sharks 28-19 at a fuller than usual Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg.
The Sharks’ loss comes at the hand of none other than Elton Jantjies, who scored 23 of his sides total of 28 points and also made a great break up midfield to set up the Lions only try via centre Lionel Mapoe. Jantjies with a faultless kicking display converted all 8 of his attempts at goal.
The Lions led 19-9 at the break after Jantjies converted four penalties and also converted Mapoe’s try from the corner. The Sharks had to settle for three penalties through the boot of Frederic Michalak with the Lions allowing the Sharks no space to manoeuvre in or get over the advantage line.
After the break Jantjies continued his dominance with the boot and added another two penalties before the Sharks launched a scathing attack on the Lions try line. After what felt like hours of defending by the Lions, Sharks captain Stefan Terblanche crossed the line from a quick penalty tap.
The Sharks launched more attacks but were met by bone-crunching hits from guys like like Pat Cilliers, Alwyn Hollenbach and Warren Whitely. The Sharks eventually settled for a long-range penalty by Meyer Bosman before Elton Jantjies put the final nail in the Sharks coffin with a perfect kick through the middle of the uprights and sending the Sharks packing with no bonus points.
