Big 50 for Whiteley

Warren Whiteley will captain the Emirates Lions for the 50th time in Vodacom Super Rugby when he leads his side on the field against the Southern Kings in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Whiteley, who returns to his former hunting ground having represented the Kings five times (2009), will be playing his 71st game for the Lions. He is the most experienced Lions captain during the last ten years with Baywatch Grobbelaar on 28 and Josh Strauss 17.

Other interesting stats:

  • Courtnall Skosan scored a record breaking 4 tries in the match for the Lions Super franchise against the Reds last weekend. Previously, the following players shared the record of 3 tries in a single Lions Super Rugby match:

Henno Mentz 3 vs Reds 2009, Wandile Mjekevu vs Chiefs 2010, and Lionel Mapoe, on two occasions, vs Cheetahs 2014 and Blues 2016.

  • With his four tries, Skosan moved up to 20 Lions Super career tries in 40 matches since 2014. He now equals Lionel Mapoe’s record of 20 tries for the Super Lions in 65 matches since 2011.
