England Counties Under 20s selectors name squad to face Georgia
THE England Counties Under 20s selectors have named a 25-man squad for the international against Georgia Under 20s at Cambridge’s Volac Park on Saturday May 24 (2pm).
The squad was selected after a recent development and selection weekend at Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College in Leicestershire where players from the four divisions – London & South East, Midlands, North and South West – were involved in ten and 15-a-side matches as well as positional-specific skills sessions.
The squad includes three players, Guy Van Dan Dries, Jack Rossiter and Ryan Redman, who toured Georgia with England Counties Under 20s last season.
Four Cambridge players – prop Jamal Ford-Robinson, flanker Sam Harry, scrum-half Jack Daly and fly-half Ben Penfold – are set to face Georgia at their home club ground. Ford-Robinson has already played for the England Counties senior side this season.
“The entire management team are very excited having the chance to work with these players,” said Rob Cliverd, chairman of England Counties Under 20s.
“We have some real quality throughout the squad and we are confident we will be competitive against what we know will be a very tough Georgia side.
“There are some extremely talented players and it is a tremendous reflection on the community game in England that so many capable players are available.
“One thing we do know is that we will not be disadvantaged size-wise. This is by a long way the biggest group of players we have ever seen. How skilful we will be to add to this remains to be seen but we cannot wait to start work with them.”
The England Counties Under 20s squad will assemble at Cambridge on Monday 19 and the side that will form an England Counties Under 20s XV to play a Georgia Under 20s XV at Shelford on May 21 will be selected from the same 25-strong squad.
