England Sevens same squad for Clermont-Ferrand
Simon Amor has named his England Sevens side that will compete in the third leg of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series this weekend (1-2 July) in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Having recently completed their studies, Lailand Gordon and George Chatterton will travel to France this weekend alongside Fergus Guiry who returns to the squad after competing in the first round of the European competition in Moscow earlier this month.
Commenting on selection for Clermont-Ferrand, England Sevens head coach, Simon Amor, said: “The whole concept behind the European tournaments for us is to develop the young talent we have and this weekend comes as a great opportunity for Lailand and George to wear an England Sevens shirt for the first time.
“Clermont-Ferrand is going to be an enormous challenge for the guys who haven’t played in a European tournament before, and particularly playing France at their home tournament which is always a special occasion, but we’re looking forward to seeing what they can bring.
“We’re also really excited to see what the players who have been in the program for a year and those who have competed in Moscow and Poland can do as well.
“It’s great to have Will Edwards come back into the squad and he’ll captain the side this weekend. This will be a brilliant opportunity for Will to demonstrate not just his skills and what a wonderful sevens player he is, but also for him to develop his leadership of what is a very young team.”
The youthful side secured a sixth-place finish in Lodz, Poland in the second round of this competition, with England Sevens Academy coach, Warren Abrahams praising the squad for their attitude and desire to continue building and learning.
“This weekend will be a step up in physicality for so many of these players that haven’t played at this level before and are about to face some very experienced opposition,” Amor added.
“All of this hard work and commitment will culminate at the Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s which is a fundamental tournament for us and one that the guys will be competing for a spot at this weekend.”
England will face France, Poland, and Russia in the pool stages on Saturday 1 July, all of which will be live streamed on RugbyEurope.tv
