England Sevens same squad for Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s
- Simon Amor makes three changes for final leg of Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series
- Tickets for the weekend are still available here
Simon Amor has named the England Sevens side that will compete in the Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s this weekend (15-16 July).
Alex Davis returns to captain the squad for the final leg of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix Series while Harry Glover and Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas have both been brought in for the home tournament.
The England team for this European series has consistently contained a mix of players predominantly from the England Sevens academy, Premiership academy and the universities programme, with Simon Amor citing this competition as an opportunity to identify the next generation of talent that will come through the England Sevens pathway.
Commenting ahead of the Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s, England Sevens head coach, Simon Amor, said: “This young group has been on a great journey over the past three tournaments and now our goal for this final leg in Exeter is to put in our best performance yet.
“There have been some specific tactical areas that we’ve been looking to improve on ahead of Exeter but the wonderful challenge that we face with this European series is the change in style that the different teams play and our ability as a group to learn to adapt to these. This is an area that we’ll be looking to see if we can stretch ourselves in this weekend.
“When you look at the strength of some of the teams in this tournament with teams competing for places at Rugby World Cup Sevens and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series qualifying tournament in Hong Kong , the standard is so high. Exposure to these teams is crucial for the development of this group so we need to continue stretching our potential if there’s an opportunity for some of them to play on the World Series next season.
“The Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s is perfect preparation for these players as they’ll be playing on live television in front of friends and family and a home crowd. You only get a few times in your life to play in an England jersey in England, so Exeter is going to be a very special experience for them.”
England will face Spain, Germany and Italy in the pool stages on Saturday 15 July, all of which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 3 and live streamed on RugbyEurope.tv
