England Sevens Sydney Update
England Sevens will field an unchanged squad for a fourth successive tournament when they compete in Sydney this weekend (3-5 February).
Currently third in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, they have been drawn in Pool A with Kenya, Japan and leaders South Africa who were Cup winners in Wellington.
In surpassing 1000 series points, last weekend was a milestone tournament for captain Tom Mitchell but England’s seventh-place was disappointing after winning in Cape Town and finishing third in Dubai.
Head Coach Simon Amor said: “We had three good results in the pool stages in New Zealand but didn’t play to the standard we are capable of when it mattered on day two. Our technical accuracy in both attack and defence was not at the level it can be. We have worked hard on this here in Sydney and the squad are committed to taking their opportunity this weekend.
“We had a number of players who were returning to full fitness and will be better for the game time. The guys have trained well in tough sessions over recent months and we are confident that with more clinical performances, coupled with their strong team-first attitude, this group can make England proud and be back on the podium.”
