England Sevens to face Fiji in Wellington quarter-final
TWO wins over Papua New Guinea and Canada ensured England Sevens squad made it through to the cup quarter-finals in Wellington despite a 24-5 defeat to hosts New Zealand in their final game of day one.
Simon Amor’s side will face Fiji on Day 2 in Wellington (kick off 12.49am GMT) after a 29-0 win against Papua New Guinea and a 27-5 victory against Canada in their opening two games.
England’s James Rodwell said: “We’re feeling pretty good after a tough day one. We played well in the first two games and went into that third one against New Zealand feeling confident. We got off to a good start but made a few mistakes and then started to chase the game, which you can’t afford to do in sevens. It was a disappointing game to lose, but we can’t dwell on it.
“Fiji up next will be a massive challenge, but it’s one we’re ready for. There are no easy games in sevens. Day two is all about winning your matches, so we’ll rest up and recover tonight and get ourselves ready to take them on.”
In the other quarter finals USA will play Scotland, hosts New Zealand await Australia in a trans-Tasman match and Kenya’s reward for winning Pool D is a match with South Africa.
