England Under 18s depart for European Championship
England Under 18s have departed for France today to defend their U18 European Championship title.
Wins against Portugal, Wales and Ireland saw England win their third consecutive championship last season in Poland. The team go into the tournament having won two of their three games this season, with victories over France (21-5) and Scotland (39-27), before a narrow defeat to Wales (23-15) earlier this month. The age-group side take on Portugal in their first match on Friday afternoon in Montauban, southern France. The coaching team will be led by head coach John Fletcher and forwards coach Pete Walton. John Fletcher said: “ We are looking forward to going to France as it will be a really good opportunity for the team to play three competitive games in a European tournament. Our first game is against Portugal on Friday where we will want to put in a good early performance and then we will wait and see who we get in the remaining two games. “Winning the competition would be great, but firstly it’s about collectively as a group getting better and better. This particular group played against Scotland recently and what we are looking for is to see improvements, game by game, and if we win the competition then that is a bonus.” Will Allman (Northampton Saints, Trent College) Backs Sam Aspland-Robinson (Harlequins, Wellington College) |
