England Women call up Brennan
* Brennan set to make WRWC debut * Thompson withdraws through injury England Women have called up Richmond wing Natasha Brennan to their 26-woman Rugby World Cup squad. Brennan replaces Worcester’s Lydia Thompson who has been forced to withdraw from the squad because of a groin injury. Thompson, who scored two tries in her Rugby World Cup debut against Samoa last week, pulled up in the warm-up ahead of England’s second World Cup game against Spain on Tuesday. England Head Coach Gary Street said: “This is really unfortunate news for Lydia. She has worked extremely hard to get into this squad and she has come into form at just the right time, scoring two tries on her tournament debut. It is extremely disappointing for Lydia and us but at the same time it is fantastic to be able to call up a player of Natasha’s calibre. “Natasha has been part of our World Cup training squad and she missed out by the narrowest of margins when it came to final selection. We are really excited by what Natasha can bring after a fantastic Sevens series last season, where she finished as England’s top try scorer.” Brennan joins the England squad with two caps under her belt in XVs. Brennan made her XVs debut against Wales in this year’s Six Nations and scored a try on her debut. The 27-year-old is also a regular on the Sevens World Series having amassed 12 caps and scored 16 tries this season.
