EASTERN Province flyhalf Curwin Bosch kicked two vital penalties in the closing stages to help his team defeat KwaZulu-Natal 23-22 in the Coca-Cola Craven Week rugby tournament in Stellenbosch on Thursday (July 16).

The KZN side produced a terrific fightback with three tries in the second half, but Bosch’s accurate boot gave EP a crucial eight-point cushion with time nearly up. KZN hit back after the hooter with a try by Marco Palvie, converted by Bader Pretorius, but it was too little, too late for them.
After conceding an early penalty, EP took the lead when No 8 Khwezi Mafu burst through some flimsy tackling to make it 7-3 and a Bosch drop goal gave EP a 10-3 lead at the interval.
Immediately after the restart, EP went further ahead when centre Heino Bezuidenhout pulled off an interception for Bosch to convert, making it 17-3.
KZN then fought back strongly, with tries by Palvie and Pretorius reducing the deficit to 17-15 before Bosch virtually settled the issue in the 69th minute with his second long-range penalty to give his team a matchwinning eight-point lead.
After losing their opening match, EP Country Districts hit back strongly on Thursday to outclass Zimbabwe 51-20.
Thursday’s results were: EP 23 KZN 22, Valke 34 Griquas 21, EPCD 51 Zimbabwe 20, Griquas CD 17 Leopards 18, SWD 28 Golden Lions 19.
