EP SCHOOLS RUGBY WRAP FOR AUGUST 22
NICO Malan again showed a great degree of tenacity under pressure when they scored a late try to defeat Framesby 24-20 in their FNB Classic Clash in Humansdorp on Saturday (August 22).
The home side have had some close victories in the final stages of the season and they could hardly have cut it finer against their arch-PE rivals. Down 17-7 at one stage, Nico Malan draw on all their reserves of recovery to power back for a memorable victory.
There were two other major derbies at the weekend. In a battle of two top township schools, Solomon Mahlangu used the boot of lanky flyhalf Lonwabo Mayedwa to kick 14 points, as well as to gain a territorial advantage, in a 19-13 win over Ithembelihle.
Ithembe were as competitive as usual, scoring two tries to their opponents’ one, but Mayedwa, with four penalties and a conversion, and Solomon’s big forwards finally made the difference.
At Alexander Road, the home side, after a close first half, were well beaten by Victoria Park 34-14. VP led only 17-14 at halftime, but outstanding No 8 Sesona Macala added two tries to complete his hat-trick after the break as they surged to victory.
Eastern Cape scores were: Adelaide Gymnasium 18 Winterberg 15, Dale 15 Queen’s 14, Hudson Park 24 Cambridge 7, Nico Malan 24 Framesby 20, Westering 22 Newton Tech 8, Solomon Mahlangu 19 Ithembelihle 13, VP 34 Alexander Road 14.
