EP to defend Sevens titles at Inter Provincials
Eastern Province will be aiming to defend their titles on Friday and Saturday when SARU once again host its annual Inter Provincial Sevens Tournament at Florida Park in Ravensmead, Cape Town.
Last year EP secured a 31-29 victory over KZN to claim the title in a thrilling final played at the Nelson Mandela Bay University in Port Elizabeth while their Women’s colleagues recorded a 15-5 win over Border in the final of the Women’s Division.
Sixteen teams have been divided in to four pools in the Men’s section while 18 sides that have also been grouped into four pools will battle it out in the Womens division.
In the Men’s section, Eastern Province has been grouped in Pool A along with hosts Western Province, Griffons and the Blue Bulls Limpopo. Last year’s runners up – KwaZulu Natal, are in Pool B with the Golden Lions, Lowveld, and the Leopards.
EP’s Women’s side has been drawn with Boland, Leopards, Correctional Services and Boland B in Pool A of the Women’s section. Hosts Western Province are in Pool C and are grouped with Golden Lions, Falcons and the Blue Bulls Limpopo.
“With the inclusion Sevens in the Olympic Games of 2016 in mind, its tournaments like these which will afford our selectors an opportunity of identifying potential talent,” said Mahlubi Puzi, SARU Manager for Womens and Sevens.
“The Inter-Provincial Sevens Tournament is going to be one of the platforms where our men and women will have an opportunity to showcase their skills and talents in the Sevens format of the game.”
The action kicks off on Friday morning at 09h00 and the finals are scheduled to start at 13h00 on Saturday.

Pool A: Eastern Province, Western Province, Griffons, Blue Bulls Limpopo
Pool B: KZN, Golden Lions, Lowveld, Leopards
Pool C: Falcons, Border, Pumas, Free State
Pool D: Boland, SWD, Griquas, Blue Bulls Tshwane
Pools – Women:
Pool A: Eastern Province, Boland, Leopards, Correctional Services, Border B
Pool B: Border, Free State, Pumas, SANDF, SWD
Pool C: Western Province, Golden Lions, Falcons, Blue Bulls Limpopo
Pool D: Blue Bulls Tshwane, KZN, Griquas, Griffons
