The Force have defeated the Brumbies 31-21 in the opening trial match of 2015, in Perth on Friday night.

The match was billed as an opportunity for injury returners, David Pocock and Scotty Sio, to stretch their legs. New comers Rod Iona and Sean Doyle were also looking for game time prior to season kick-off in two weeks’ time.

Head Coach Stephen Larkham said there were things his side would need to work on before facing the Highlanders in Wagga next Saturday night.

“We’re disappointed with the result but there are a lot of positives to take away from toinght,” Larkham said.

“We’ve got six days to re-group and refocus before facing the Highlanders in Wagga. They gave us a massive shake last year and I’d expect nothing less in 2015.”

The Force started strong and maintained pressure, leading from go-to-wow in a tough encounter which saw the mercury spike to 30 degrees.

Rookie Tom Staniforth got ahead of himself and was binned in the first quarter leading to a Force onslaught and 17-0 scoreboard.

Eventually the Brumbies would score points through former Force Captain, David Pocock and Wallabies inside-centre, Christian Lealiifano but it wasn’t enough to pin the West Australians.

Force 31 (Luke Morahan, Chris Alcock, Marcel Brache, Mitchell Scott, Wilhelm Steenkamp tries; Sias Ebersohn 1/3 conversions, Zack Holmes 2/2 conversions) bt Brumbies 21 (David Pocock, Christian Lealiifano, Sean Doyle tries; Rodney Iona 2/2 conversions, Nic White 1/1 conversion)
