FRIDAY is derby-day at the Boland Stadium
FRIDAY is derby-day at the Boland Stadium in Wellington, when the Boland Cavaliers square off against the SWD Eagles in a Currie Cup Qualifying match.
This fixture never fails to entertain and this year should be no exception. With both teams still strong contenders to reach the Top 8 of the Currie Cup, both Boland and SWD will have everything to play for on Friday.
After their nail biting 24-22 away win against the Valke last Friday, the Cavaliers are second on the log with 25 points (behind Griquas on 34 points). The Eagles are currently ninth on the log with 15 points.
The Cavaliers have had an impressive run this far, but will be looking to avoid the pressure they faced against the Valke last Friday when they were trailing 22-10 at one stage. The team showed great character to bounce back however, with captain Ryan Nell scoring two tries (converted by Fullback Nico Scheepers) and vice-captain Zandré Jordaan scoring the equaliser in the last minute. Replacement flyhalf Theuns Kotze kept his cool and slotted the match-winning conversion after full-time.
What Friday’s event even more exciting, is the fact that the Boland u.20 team will kick-off their Currie Cup campaign as well, as they will go head-to-head with SWD in a curtain raiser for the Cavaliers vs Eagles match.
Friday’s fixtures at the Boland Stadium, Wellington are as follows:
12:45 – Boland U.20 vs SWD U.20
15:00 – Boland Cavaliers vs SWD Eagles
Entrance is R30 for adults and R10 for scholars.
- The Boland Cavaliers vs SWD Eagle match will be broadcast live on Supersport at 15:00.
ROAD CLOSURES: Please note that part of Fontein Street in Wellington (between Willem Basson street and Burg street) will be closed off by Law Enforcement officials on Friday 27 May from 11:00 to 17:00 for access control and in order to control the flow of traffic in front of the Boland stadium during the Boland vs SWD match.
