Around fifty aspiring Crusaders are attending a training camp at Lincoln University today and tomorrow, with the Crusaders Knights squad for 2016 to be selected out of a trial game tomorrow afternoon.

The Crusaders Knights squad is the BNZ Crusaders’ development side. It’s purpose is to give non playing Crusaders and New Zealand Under 20 players the opportunity for game time each week, while also developing some upcoming national provincial, academy and club players from across the franchise who are identified as being potential Crusaders within the next 3 years.

This year’s Crusaders Knights squad will be coached by Joe Maddock, with support from Mark Brown and Johnny Leo’o.

“The training camp at Lincoln is a chance for us to work with some of the emerging talent in particular, and give those players a chance to stake their claim for a place in the squad,” Maddock said.  “It is an intense programme for them out here which culminates in the trial game tomorrow afternoon.  I’ve seen enough already out here today to be feeling very excited about the season ahead and the talent that we’ll have to work with.”

The Crusaders Knights will play their first game against the Hurricanes development team on 19 February in Blenheim.  They will then play three matches against the Highlanders development team, at Christchurch’s Rugby Park on 27 February, Dunedin’s Logan Park on 5 March, and the Pleasant Point Rugby Club on 12 March.
