GRAND CHALLENGE: PE SAPS STAY UNBEATEN
PE SAPS maintained their unbeaten record in the EP Grand Challenge when they produced a fine display of running rugby to defeat close rivals NMMU Madibaz 25-5 at the campus on Tuesday (June 2).
In inflicting the fourth defeat on the Madibaz this season, SAPS have firmly established themselves as the chief challengers to rampant logleaders Despatch and their clash on June 27 is shaping up to be an epic encounter.
NMMU coach David Maidza was not that happy with his team’s performance against SAPS. “We were poor,” was his succinct reply when asked about the game.
On the other hand, SAPS president Danie Gouws was delighted with their win but knows the big one is looming against Despatch.
“It was a good hard game, with some excellent running rugby,” Gouws said. “We got off to a quick start, leading 18-0 and then they came back with a try. But I felt we played well in a really good encounter.”
Following the Tuesday fixture, both teams take a break this weekend when Despatch are sure to continue their winning form against Grahamstown Brumbies in Despatch. The Brumbies are fresh from a good win against Progress, but Despatch may be a bridge too far.
Park will face their fixture against Progress in Uitenhage with renewed confidence after recording their first win last weekend against Windvogel, but will be up against a side hurting from last week’s loss and desperate to score a win on their homeground.
Similarly, African Bombers will be aiming to arrest an alarming slump after five losses when they host Trying Stars in Zwide. The Alexandria team, though, have proved extremely competitive in their debut Grand Challenge season and there will be no easy pickings for Bombers.
Saders, who lost to Trying Stars last weekend, face a tough challenge from Harlequins at Saders, while Spring Rose, with only one loss in five games, should have the edge at home against Kruisfontein.
