Grey face Johannesburg rivals in festival

GREY High have set themselves up for two intriguing encounters against Johannesburg opposition when they take on Parktown and Jeppe in the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival in Port Elizabeth at the end of the month.

As was the case last year, the festival will see two days of action, but there will be plenty to watch as the matches will include fixtures for U16, U15 and U14 teams. The games will take place on April 27 and 29.

The organisers have again attracted an excellent cross-section of teams from around South Africa, with Durban High School, who had a good year in 2016, representing KwaZulu-Natal.

Parktown, Jeppe, St John’s and St David’s from the Johannesburg contingent, while St Alban’s are the Pretoria representatives and Louis Botha Tech are from Bloemfontein.

In addition, the top Eastern Cape schools will be in attendance, with Graeme and St Andrew’s from Grahamstown, and Dale, Queen’s and Hudson Park making up the Border representation.

The Grey-Parktown clash, which will close out the festival on Saturday, will be a repeat of last year’s opening day match-up which the home side won 28-7.

Jeppe, meanwhile, will provide an excellent challenge for the hosts in their opening game.

The school of former Springbok mentor Jake White, who coached there, and ex-Springbok hooker James Dalton, the Johannesburg side have a proud history as a tough rugby unit and their clash should provide a fitting finale to the first day’s programme.

Other clashes worth noting see St John’s facing tough encounters against Queen’s and St Andrew’s, two sides who have reputation for running rugby, making your defensive tactics a top priority in any match against them.

After an excellent season last year, it will be interesting to see what Dale can produce this time.

They open with a testing encounter against the competitive Daniel Pienaar outfit from Uitenhage but are likely to prove a handful for Pearson in their second match.

A total of 65 matches will take place over the two days, with games being played at the school fields of Philip, Pyott, Pollock and Gordon, as well as at Old Grey and Police in Kemsley Park.
