Hermies Flying High
Approximately 120 km from Cape Town, in the heart of the Overberg, lies the picturesque town Hermanus – better known as the Whale-Mecca of Southern Africa. Things are stirring in this idyllic little slice of heaven with Hermanus High School rugby going from strength to strength over the last couple of years.
The Hermies kicked-off the 2011 season with a tour to Argentina, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience for the boys. Two teams, 33players played six games against strong opposition of which the Hermies won five of the matches. The team got the opportunity to visit Buenos Aires, the coastal village Mar del Plata and the beautiful Rosario. It was an exceptionally successful tour, which served towards the impressive record achieved thus far.
In the second term games were played against Villiersdorp – won 55 -0, Groenberg won 47 -0, Parel Vallei won 82 -5, Montagu won 20-7, Bredasdorp won 25-0 and the strong team of Worcester won 6-0 in very rainy conditions. So far, Hermies 1st XV is still unbeaten with a couple of exciting matches still too played in the 3rd term. These include the Classic Clash against Hawston on 6 August, Swartland on 13 August and the Interschool fixture against Overberg on 20 August.
The key to the success lies in a very strong and well drilled pack of forwards where stalwart players like lock Bernard Jordan, no 8 Dalton Raaff and the juggernaut prop Deacon Chowles enforce their dominance. An exciting backline and solid defense, alongside a strong 2nd team all contribute to our success. The 2nd team is unbeaten thus far in 2011. The Hermies u/16 team is also leading the pack mwith the u/14, set to surprise a few opponents. The future therefore looks very bright and we predict that “Hermies” will be a team to be reckoned with for a long time to come.
Five players took part in the u/18 Boland Elite group. They were Deacon Chowles, Thomas Bednall, Dalton Raaff, Chad Kleinsmidt and Bernard Jordaan. Deacon Chowles will be representing the Boland u/18 Academy Team, which will play in Johannesburg. Most of the players were unlucky not to make the Boland team.
Three u/16 players; E.Adams, M.van Wyk and L.Zas played in the final trial teams against WP but were unfortunately not chosen for the u/16 team. The mixture of grade 11’s and 12’s within the first team is healthy for next year with a couple of promising u/16 players emerging.
Under the leadership and coaching of Graham Bellinghan, “Hermies” provide you with another reason to visit the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus. What better day out then watching ‘Hermies” in action, followed by an unforgettable visit to the whales.
“Hermies” old boy, Pertus de Plessies is currently playing for Saracens in the AVIVA Premiership in England. Saracens have recently been crowned Champions on the AVIVA Premiership.
