International debuts for Welsh Woman
Sunday marks a big day for the Llandaff North club as three of their players will be making their international debuts in the opening round of the Six Nations at Aberavon.
Second row Jenny Hawkins, centre Robyn Wilkins and winger Laurie Harries have all been selected in Rhys Edwards Wales side which kicks off their campaign against Italy at the Talbot Athletic Ground. (Kick-off 1pm).
There are also two uncapped players on the bench with Bristol scrum half Sion Moore and Maesteg Celtic wing Ffion Bowen eagerly awaiting their chance to shine.
At just 18 years of age, Wilkins is the youngest member of the selected squad but she is showing no sign of nerves.
“I’m really excited – I haven’t played much at centre recently as I’ve been playing fly half so it’s a new challenge for me. I played there in a warm-up game against the Nomads and really enjoyed it.”
Hawkins added that she has already learned a lot in a relatively short space of time with the Wales squad.
“Personally for me it has been a fantastic experience. I’ve only been with the squad for the last four months. The amount I have already learnt has been amazing.”
Harries, who has already represented Wales at Sevens, is thankful for the support she has received from their club mates.
“We’ve had a lot of support from the other guys in the club who are still carrying on with their Cup season and they are doing really well. They’ve been really supportive and we wouldn’t be here now without them. We can’t wait for the game to kick off and all things being well we’ll start the Six Nations with a good win against Italy.”
