INTRUST SUPER SHUTE SHIELD: ROUND 16 RESULTS
A barnstorming four-try effort from the visiting Marlins in the first half silenced the thronging home crowd at Pittwater Rugby Park, but a second half resurgence ensured the Bayfield Cup was a competitive affair with Warringah coming away with a hard-fought five point win over Manly, 29-24.
THE MATCH
Manly were first to draw blood in the much anticipated ‘Battle of the Beaches’, when Alex Northam crossed the line in just the fourth minute of the match. Well supported by the reliable Reece Hodge, the visitors were ahead 7-0 at Pittwater Park in the opening stages of the match.
Warringah looked determined to repent for their earlier mistake, but a dominant defensive display from Manly saw their try-scoring efforts thwarted. A penalty goal to Warringah in the thirteenth minute narrowed the gap to four points.
An unstoppable run from Alex Northam saw him score his second try of the match just three minutes later, again supported by Dennis Pili-Gaitau and converted by Hodge. With the lead out to 11 points, there was even a follow-up try attempt from the Marlin’s front row that didn’t quite hit the mark.
It wasn’t long before the Marlins scored again, with Caderyn Neville crossing in the corner to make it three tries in the opening 20 minutes of the match for the visitors.
Warringah’s best effort to gain territory saw them just metres away from the Manly line, but the Marlins were quick to force the turnover and Sam Lane was able to make significant ground as a result. A yellow card to Chris Arnold put Warringah at further disadvantage, and prop Dane Maraki burst through to score the bonus point try in the 30th minute of the match.
David Feltscheer produced Warringah’s first try of the match in the 37th minute, much to the delight of the home crowd, and Hamish Angus kicked his second goal of the match to convert it as the half-time break approached. The teams left the field with the score at 24-10 to the Marlins.
A revitalised home side returned to the field after the break, and were immediately on the attack with a try scored by Sam Crompton easily in the 44th minute of the match to take the scores to 24-15 to Manly.
The enthusiasm of Warringah was marred by handling errors, but there was a distinct shift in the momentum of the match with their resurgent start to the second half.
After a short injury delay, Warringah continued their fightback with a scrambling try under the cross-bar. Hamish Angus added the extras to take the Rats to just a two point deficit, 24-22, in front of a vocal home crowd of more than 4000 people.
A late hit on Manly’s Reece Hodge by Josh Holmes resulted in a penalty goal opportunity to Hodge, but though he reached the distance the kick was inaccurate and he wasn’t able to extend their lead, with just over 20 minutes left in the match.
A crucial try to Josh Holmes saw Warringah take the lead for the first time in the match in the 63rd minute, with Holmes capitalising on teammate David Felstcheer’s mistake and running in the five-pointer. Angus neatly slotted his fourth goal of the match, and the score moved to 29-24 to the home side.
Alex Northam looked to have secured his hat-trick of tries shortly after but Sam Lane’s pass was ruled forward, and the chance for Manly to reclaim the lead was lost.
A courageous effort from the Marlins in the final minutes of the game was not rewarded with points on the board, and the final scrum in the 81st minute was the decider, with Warringah taking the win, and the Bayfield Cup 29-24.
