JANSE VAN RENSBURG APPOINTED KINGS COACH
The EP Kings are pleased to announce that Brent Janse van Rensburg, who took up the position of defence coach with the team early this year, has been appointed head coach for the Currie Cup campaign, which begins in August.
The former NMMU Madibaz coach joined the Kings for their Vodacom Cup campaign this year after a brief stint with the Lions.
Janse van Rensburg will take up his position with immediate effect. The Kings play their first match against the Lions on August 8, and he will also be in charge for the pre-season friendlies against the Sharks, the Bulls and Western Province.
“Brent is a top calibre coach, having earned his stripes in the school system and at the NMMU Madibaz, and we are confident that he will play a significant role in our preparations going forward,” said EP Kings chief executive Charl Crous.
“He is familiar with operations at the Kings and we are sure he will be able to bring the best out in the team for the Currie Cup campaign.”
Janse van Rensburg will be assisted by Carlos Spencer (backline and skills coach), Darron Nell (lineout and forwards coach) and CJ van der Linde, who is still playing but will assist in the scrummaging department.
Janse van Rensburg started his rugby coaching career with the South African Rugby Institute, before moving through the school ranks when he took over as head of rugby at Queen’s College, later becoming the school’s professional rugby coach.
His work at the school saw him become involved in Border rugby and Janse van Rensburg spent two years with the union before taking on both the role of technical director and head coach at Alan Zondagh’s Rugby Performance Centre.
In 2011, Janse van Rensburg took over as head coach at NMMU and built the team into a competitive unit that worked closely with the Kings Academy and EP Kings professional structures. Under his mentorship, the team emerged from being the Varsity Cup’s whipping boys to come within a whisker of qualifying for the competition final.
In 2014, Janse van Rensburg was employed as director of rugby at Grey High, coaching the team to a memorable victory over Grey College, their first over their Bloemfontein rivals in 10 years.
With regard to the position of directory of rugby/Super Rugby head coach, Crous said they were still busy with negotiations.
