Counties Manukau lock Jimmy Tupou and Wellington fullback Jason Woodward have both been suspended for one week following separate judicial hearings today for foul play.

Tupou was cited for breach of law 10.4 (a), after striking Waikato first five eighth Damian McKenzie in the 80th minute of their Week 5 ITM Cup match at Waikato Stadium on Sunday.

Judicial Officer Roger Drummond found that Tupou had acted recklessly but not deliberately, when he struck McKenzie during a ruck clean out near the end of the game. Waikato won the match 26 -21.

Tupou’s suspension means he is unable to play any rugby up to, and including, Tuesday 23 September, meaning he is not available for Counties Manukau’s match against Canterbury this Friday.

Meanwhile Woodward was also suspended for one week after he was found to have breached law 10.4 (a) for punching Canterbury winger Patrick Osborne in the 42nd minute of the first half of their match last Friday.

Canterbury had referred the incident to Citing Commissioner Martin Harris, and today Woodward admitted to Judicial Officer Bruce Squire QC that he punched Osborne twice, claiming he felt provoked into doing so after an encounter with Osborne as both teams were trying to clean out a ruck.

Woodward’s suspension means he will miss Wellington’s home game against Tasman on Sunday.
