Joe Pietersen shares thoughts on the challenges and opportunities with Toyota Cheetahs in 2015
1. Your Twitter feed shows you love the bush, and are a keen horse rider, conservationist and photographer. Also a very proud dad. Is that a fairly accurate description of Joe Pietersen?
HAHA, yes that’s a very accurate description, the horse was a one time thing though. Nature and the ocean have my heart.
2. You are best known for your years at Western Province and The Stormers, what excites you about the opportunity to play for the Toyota Cheetahs?
I see my time here as a good challenge and I hope that I can contribute to this team.
3. What are your personal and team goals for 2015?
Like I said, I would like to make a positive contribution and I am also hoping we can work towards a high log position and look at a play-off.
4. 2015 is a World Cup year – do you still have dreams of strapping on a Springbok jersey? If so what will you have to do to catch the eye of the selectors?
Everyone wants to play for the Boks, but reality is, out of the 350 top players in South Africa, about 30 guys get the honour. My focus is to add to this team and pull my weight here.
5. The Toyota Cheetahs had it tough in Vodacom Super Rugby last season – what do you expect the coaching staff to do differently to ensure a consistently high level of play in 2015?
The good thing about a tough season is that there is lots to learn from, I am sure next season will see improvements. Sometimes a small change or tweak here and there makes a big difference.
6. Which teams will be the biggest challenge for the Toyota Cheetahs in Vodacom Super Rugby 2015 and which teams do you tip for the top 4 places?
The Crusaders always have a top outfit, especially in New Zealand. In SA the Sharks have been a great team and have a Springbok in almost every position, making them very dangerous.
7. What are your thoughts on the new PUMA Vodacom Super Rugby kit?
PUMA sets the trend in everything they do, and the jersey is no different. I think it’s super cool and funky.
8. Which boots do you play in and why do you choose to play in those particular boots?
I have been playing in PUMA boots for the last 10 years. Like I mentioned before, PUMA sets the standard and their boots are no different. In terms of comfort, design, look and technology they are definitely leading the race.
9. You have twice spent time playing rugby in France – how have these experiences impacted you as a player?
I feel it gives the individual the chance to really grow in terms of creativity and decision-making, due to the language barrier.
10. Do you recommend that all young South African players play at least 1 season abroad? If so, how will they benefit as people and as rugby players?
Living in a foreign country doesn’t always appeal to everyone, but I would definitely recommend it, it opens your eyes to new things in life and also gives you the chance to travel and learn from other cultures.
