Junior Springboks defeat hosts Italy #WorldRugbyU20s
The Junior Springboks got their World Rugby U20s Championship campaign underway with a convincing 33 – 5 win over a determined and spirited Italian side.
The hosts were first to score when winger Yannick Agbasse showed a clean pair heels against the run of play in the 10th minute. Flyhalf Maicol Azzolini missed the conversion from out wide.
A somewhat rusty looking South African side struck back when hooker Jan van der Merwe crossed the whitewash 2 minutes later. Flyhalf Brandon Thomson added the extras taking his team to a 7-5 lead.
A 32nd min yellow card proved costly for the Italians. Lock Davide Zanetti was sent to the bin for leading with the shoulder. The Baby Boks took full advantage of this period racking up 14 points.
South Africa was awarded a penalty try in the 33rd minute when Italy were pinned for collapsing the maul. Thompson slotted his second conversion of the night.
Junior Bok captain Hanro Liebenberg crashed over three minutes later.
Brandon Thompson successfully added the extras.
The South Africans went into the hut leading 21 – 5 at half-time.
The Junior Boks extended their lead to 26 – 5 in the 62nd minute when flanker Rikus Bothma scored the bonus point try from a lineout drive. Replacement flyhalf Tinus de Beer was unable to add the extras.
South African lock RG Snyman was yellow-carded for a professional foul at lineout time with 7 minutes on the clock but the Italians were unable to capitalize on their numbers advantage.
Frans van Wyk scored the Junior Springboks bonus point try in the 77nd minute from another lineout drive. De Beer succeeded with the conversion.
