Match report: FNB Maties vs FNB CUT
FNB Maties thumps FNB CUT in opening round
FNB Maties got off to the best possible start in the opening round of the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International, when they comfortably overcame FNB CUT in Stellenbosch.
The FNB Maties were far too strong for FNB CUT as they posted 40 unanswered points in the 80 minutes to make an early statement in this year’s FNB Varsity Cup. The strong wind the men from Stellenbosch played with in the first half proved to be a key factor in their lead 26-0 half time score.
An early five point try by captain, Beyers de Villiers, set the tone for the rest of his forwards who went on to dominate the CUT pack. Two tries by eight man, Kobus van Dyk in quick succession and a great finish by flyhalf, Ernst Stapelberg, secured the bonus-point before half time.
FNB CUT failed to use the wind to their advantage in the second half as FNB Maties continued to look the more threatening of the two. A powerful maul in the FNB CUT 22 lead to hooker, Craig Corbett, diving over in the right hand corner to take the score to 31-0 after 55 minutes. The wind continued to limit both teams’ handling, but with two minutes remaining, fullback, Craig Barry, broke through the FNB CUT defence from the half way line and offloaded brilliantly to replacement winger, Edwill van der Merwe, who crossed the line for the game’s only 7 point try. Stapelberg slotted his fourth conversion of the night to hand his team a 40 point victory over FNB CUT.
FNB Maties will celebrate their ability to use the wind to their advantage, while FNB CUT will lament their inability to record a single point in one of the more one-sided games of the day.
