Match Report – Heidelberg Volkskool vs Hugenote (Springs)
“Valke Groot Skole” Final – 25 July 2015 at Isak Steyl stadium in Vanderbijlpark
HEIDELBERG VOLKIES “WHITE TIGERS” WIN THE “VALKE GROOT SKOLE” LEAGUE
On a cold and windy winter’s afternoon Heidelberg Volkies and Hugenote contested the crown for the 2015 “Valke Groot Skole” Champion.
First Half
The first half was a ding-dong affair with the lead changing numerous times.
Three minutes into the game the Volkies forwards were penalised for playing the ball on the ground and the Hugenote fly-half, Lenus Wilkinson, landed his first penalty.
Six minutes into the first half Jan Kotze landed his first penalty for Volkies, which he followed up 3 minutes later with another penalty to give Volkies the lead until the 18 minute of the game, when Hugenote fly-half landed another penalty to bring the scores level at 6 all.
Five minutes later, in the 23rd minute of the game Lenus Wilkinson landed his third penalty to put Hugenote in the lead 9 – 6.
In the 25th Minute of the game Brendon Strydom, Valke Craven week prop, scored Volkies first try. The try came from a short lineout, 5 metres from the Hugenote goal line, where Brendon was used as the receiver and caught the Hugenote forwards on the wrong foot. Jan Kotze missed the conversion.
Half time score – Hugenote 9 – Heidelberg Volkies 11
Volkies forwards dominated the scrums in the first half and their line-out play was good. Their loose forwards worked hard and created at least 5 turnovers situations but the backline of Hugenote kept to their task and defended very well.
In the first half the flyhalf of Hugenote had a good game and used his backline to good effect, while Brendon Strydom and Willie De Klerk played well for Volkies
Second Half
The Hugenote side started the second half on the back foot with the kick-off that didn’t travelled 10 meters. This put the Hugenote under pressure and resulted in a penalty a minute later which Jan Kotze successfully kicked through the posts.
Hugenote immediately retaliated with a try by Xavier Hawley(wing) after bad defence by the Volkie backline. This meant that the score was even with thirty minutes to go.
Four minutes later, in the seventh minute of the second half, after good play by Volkies and a few penalties in the 22 metre area Jan Kotze went over for his try, which he also converted.
For the rest of the game, the Volkies defence was tested at numerous occasions by the Hugenote backline, but the 15 “White Tigers” stuck to their guns and Hugenote could not score anymore points.
Final score – Heidelberg Volkies 21 Hugenote 14
In the second half Alton Palmer and Donovan Strydom defended well for Volkies.
At his stage the team has won the NWU Vaal super 15, all their matches at the Walvis Bay Desert Festival and the “Valke” League (the first time in 13 years). Definitely something to be proud of in the year that the school celebrates its 100th anniversary.
In the next few weeks the Beeld trophy will be contested with Hugenote playing Helpmekaar next weekend in the qualifying round and Heidelberg Volkies playing the winner of Potch Gimnasium and Overkruin High School in the Quarter finals in 14 days’ time.
