Match Report: Mutual & Federal Premier Inter-Schools Rondebosch vs Bishops (Interskole)

Bishops hosted Rondebosch in another Mutual & Federal Interschools event with Rondebosch coming into the encounter having won the previous match in 2012. In the 183rd fixture between the two schools, the Rondebosch boys played in purple socks to raise awareness against bullying in schools.

Rondebosch was having the better of the early exchanges with Bishops unable to get out of their own half. The pressure paid off for the Bosch boys when Nic le Loux went over the white line for the first try of the game for Bosch. Bosch continued to assault the Bishops try line and it eventually paid off again when a brilliant cross kick from the flyhalf allowed the right wing to dot down for the second try. Bishops showed attacking intent but the Bosch defence was holding firm. Bosch had a chance to put some points on the board but thee penalty was missed.

A penalty given away by Bishops resulted in Rondebosch’s third try, and a rolling maul from a line out allowed flanker Philip Jankielsohn so secure another 5 points for Bosch. The Rondebosch flyhalf was not having a good day in front of the posts, missing his second conversion of the day. Rondebosch took a 17-0 lead into the half time break.

A half time talk must have sparked Bishops as they were looking more menacing early in the second half. In contrast to the opening scenes of the first half, Bishops were not allowing Bosch to get out of their own half. Bishops kept piling on the pressure but the Bosch defence stood stoic. Bishops finally got a break through when fullback Gerard Pieterse went over the line after some individual brilliance, for bishops first try and points of the match. Herman Share added two more points to take the score to 17-7. Bosch responded shortly after with a try from inside centre Ronald Melck. Bishops continued to look much better than they did in the first half but were unable to penetrate the Bosch defence.

Try scorer Pieterse had to depart the field after getting injured late into the game while the latter stages of the game provided Bosch with more opportunities to score. 5m from the try line, Bosch were battering the Bishops defence. A red card resulted for bishops after the 70th minute. Reduced to 14 men, Bishops continued to hold their line, not allowing Bosch to score another try. The game ended 22-7, Rondebosch taking the victory and bragging rights.
