Venue: Hoërskool Ermelo, Ermelo
Kick-off: 15:00, 7 Mei, 2016
ERMELO – The Steval Pumas and Windhoek Welwitschias couldn’t ask for better playing conditions for the fifth provincial qualifying match played at the Ermelo High School,
This match was the highlight of the school sport between Ermelo High School and Piet Retief High School’s league fixture. The highly contended first team rugby match ended in a battle, which was won by the visitors, Piet Retief by 21-19.
As the cold weather crept in at kick-off between the Steval Pumas and Windhoek Draught Welwitschias the Pumas turned on the heat from the word go. Small handling errors on the try line cost them early points, but they kept ball in hand for Francois du Toit to score the first try in the seventh minute. Justin van Staden showed the side wind is no problem with his conversion.
The Pumas forwards dominated their opponents and Lambert Groenewald was rewarded with a converted try in the 12th minute. Francois du Toit powered his way over the line for his second try in the 18th minute and Van Staden added the extra points. Groenewald scored his second, and the bonus point try minutes later with Van Staden on target. The first chance for the Namibians to throw around the ball only came in the 27th minute. But the Steval Pumas poached it and in the 34th minute De-Jay Terblanché crossed the line with another successful Van Staden conversion. The Pumas lead by 35-0 at the break.
At the start of the second half the Namibians had more ball in hand but the Pumas’ defence kept them from scoring. Eventually it was Hennie Skorbinski who opened up the second half scoring with a driving try for the Pumas with debutant, Marlou van Niekerk adding the extra two.
Russel van Wyk succeeded to cross the white chalk for the Welwitschias only in the 30th minute of the half and Justin Nel added the extra points. The star of the day must be Francois du Toit after he scored his third, very easy try in the 37th minute to clinch a victory of 47 – 7 to the Steval Pumas.
Next week the Steval Pumas will travel to Pretoria to take on the Vodacom Blue Bulls. Kick-off is at 15:00.
