“It is going very well here and there is no reason for me to go anywhere else. I am happy in the team, we are playing good rugby and there are a lot of quality youngsters coming through the ranks. It all bodes well for Bulls rugby and I want to remain part of it.”

With those words Morne Steyn extended his contract with the Blue Bulls company until October 2013.

Steyn broke the record for most points scored in a Super season (263) in 2010. He is also the all time South African points scorer in Super rugby with 757 points.

He said he had no reason to leave and admitted to getting numerous overseas offers, but that nothing “tickled his fancy”.

“I realised during the Springbok tour to Europe last year that I am not very keen to play rugby there. Speaking to players who are there at the moment and who came back made me realise that the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.”

Coach Frans Ludeke said he was very pleased with the loyalty shown by Steyn.

“Morne’s decision will have a massive impact on the whole union. He is a world class player and to hear that he wants to stay and continue to help build what we believe could be special, is remarkable. He will be an important cog in the future and the success of our team.”

“We will be losing some experience and quality when guys like Fourie Du Preez leaves after 2011 and someone like Victor Matfield is likely to retire. It is very important that some senior players stay here to keep the ship going in the right direction. I would like to be one of them and give some guidance to the younger ones in the process,” Steyn said.
