In the light of the South African Rugby Awards held in Johannesburg last, the Managing Director of Mpumalanga Rugby (PTY) Ltd and CEO of Mpumalanga Rugby Union, Pieter Burger gave the following statement:

“What an honour to be part of such a prestigious event. The honour to be part of the event however did not stop there, as Mpumalanga rugby has been put on the map, yet again. In 2013 the accolades went to the Steval Pumas, coach Jimmy Stonehouse and Rosko Specman. This year both Renaldo Bothma and Duane Vermeulen did the union proud with Bothma winning the 2014 Vodacom Cup Player of the Year title. Late last year he was acknowledged as the Player of the Year, and several other accolades at the annual Mpumalanga Rugby Awards function. Vermeulen, a former Puma and Nelspruit resident, stunned the rugby public with no less than three top awards, SARU Player’s Player of the Year, Super Rugby Player of the Year and SARU Player of the year.”

“Congratulations to these two ambassadors of the sport and their respective provinces. Although they do play for other provinces, of which we are proud of, they still represent the Pumas in our hearts and we are proud of them. This year the Mpumalanga Rugby Union’s mission is to have a bigger representation all levels of the rugby sporting code. We would like to encourage all referees, junior rugby players and professionals to strive for the top accolades.”

“To all the other category winners, congratulations with the awards, stay humble, keep believing in yourself and your team mates and always remember where you come from and who you are.”
