On behalf of the Board of the Kenya Rugby Union, I would like to inform you that the Chairman of the Union, Mr. Mwangi Muthee, has resigned from the Board with immediate effect. In accordance with Clause 10 (10) of the Constitution of the Union,
“…provided that when a serving officer vacates office before the expiry of his term, on account of resignation, death or whatsoever other reason, the Board by majority vote, shall have the right to fill such vacancy within fourteen (14) days and the officer so appointed may serve out the remainder of the current term of office.”
The Board at a meeting held on 17th December 2014, unanimously appointed Mr. Gabriel Ouko as Chairman of the Union and shall serve out the remainder of the term – until the next Annual General Meeting which shall be held before the 31st March 2015. Mr. Ouko shall also continue to discharge his duties as the Hon. Treasurer of the Union.
We would like to reassure our affiliates, partners, sponsors and the general public that the Board remains legally constituted and fully functional. The Union programmes shall continue to successfully run; Kenya Sevens is currently under the guidance of Felix Ochieng and the Board assures Mr. Ochieng and his management of unwavering support. We are confident that Kenya Sevens shall maintain its core status at the World Series and realize the nation’s dream of being the first team sport to participate in the Olympics.
We remain on track in professionalizing the Union Secretariat. We have commenced the professional recruitment of a Chief Executive Officer and Chief Finance Officer who shall be in office by the 1st February 2015. The Union is also currently developing its new 5 year cycle Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020. In addition we have retained the services of a consultant to streamline our human, administrative and financial processes.
Our tournaments and fixtures will continue to run as normal.
Board also reiterates its continued commitment to its partners and sponsors to ensuring the Kenya Rugby Union continues to be professionally and efficiently managed. Most importantly, our doors and books remain open to anyone. As a Union and a Board, we have never had anything to hide.
We otherwise graciously take this opportunity to unreservedly applaud the former Chairman, Mr. Muthee for his selfless and dedicated effort to the game of rugby. Undoubtedly under his tenure the game has been taken to every corner in the country, Kenya Sevens grew into a global brand and Kenya XVs was on the brink of a Rugby World Cup qualification. The Board and the game are forever indebted to him. As a Board we sincerely thank him and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. He shall forever be a good friend of rugby.
