National Club Rugby Round-up – One week to Club Champs kick-off
Pretoria Police or Tukkies will become the 16th and final team to qualify for next week’s National Club Championships in Stellenbosch, when they meet in the Blue Bulls’ Carlton League final at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday at 17h00.
With just eight days to go until the start of the 37th Club Champs, to be held at the Coetzenburg fields at the University of Stellenbosch from September 17-23, 15 teams have already confirmed their place in the season-ending tournament.
Tuks and Police have met in three of the last four Carlton finals, with the Bobbies famously beating the students 31-28 in 2009 to qualify for the Club Champs, which, ironically, were held at the Tuks Rugby Stadium that year.
Since the then Northern Transvaal broke away from Transvaal in 1938, Police have won the Carlton 31 times (26 wins, 5 draws). Tuks have lifted the trophy on 21 occasions (18 wins, 3 draws) since their first final in 1960.
This century’s Carlton finals:
2000 Technicon 26 Tuks 21
2001 Correctional Services 18 Tuks 16
2002 Tuks 46 Technicon 31
2003 Technikon won by default against Tuks
2004 TUT 35 Tuks 27
2005 TUT (No final; most league points)
2006 Police 23 TUT 20
2007 Tuks 27 Police 16
2008 Tuks 38 TUT 18
2009 Police 31 Tuks 28
