New coaches announced for Hurricanes for next season
The NZRU has announced former All Black Mark Hammett as the next coach of the Hurricanes, taking over from Colin Cooper at the end of this season.
The Dominion Post reported Hammett as having been appointed on Saturday, with former All Black cenrte Alana Ieremaia as his assistant. Hammett had been linked to a role with the forwards at the Melbourne Rebels, but said he was ‘excited’ to have got the nod in Wellington, where he will move after seeing out this season with the Crusaders.
“This is a great opportunity and I am looking forward to stepping up to the responsibility of being head coach,” he said.
“The Hurricanes have a strong and proud team and I’m looking forward to being part of building on the great work already achieved.”
Neil Sorensen, the NZRU general manager of professional rugby, said Hammett was a “formidable figure” who went close to taking the Crusaders’ top job two years ago.
“As a former All Black and Super rugby player himself, Hammer brings another element to his philosophy and approach to work as a coach, and that can only be great for the team,” Sorensen said.
“He is ready to step up to the top job and we are delighted that he has chosen to stay in New Zealand to do so.”
