Nick Mallett has named a star-studded World XV team to play the Springboks this weekend
June 05, 2014
The team has a distinct southern hemisphere flavour to it, with the back-row boasting the only Northern Hemisphere players in the form of Georgia’s Mamuka Gorgodze, England’s Steffon Armitage and Ireland’s Roger Wilson. The international selection includes five Springboks and two other South Africans.
The Top 14 provides the bulk of the players, with the entirety of the backline and six of the pack plying their trade in France’s top league. Alistair Hargreaves and Jimmy Cowan, who starts on the bench, are the Premiership’s only representatives, while there is a strong South African expat contribution.
The team is: 15 James O’Connor, 14 Drew Mitchell, 13 Rene Ranger, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Hosea Gear, 10 Matt Giteau (captain), 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Roger Wilson, 7 Steffon Armitage, 6 Mamuka Gorgodze, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Juandré Kruger, 3 Carl Hayman, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Sona Taumalolo. Replacements: 16 Andrew Hore, 17 Schalk Ferreira, 18 Pat Cilliers, 19 Joe Tekori, 20 Alexandre Lapandry, 21 Jimmy Cowan, 22 François Trinh-Duc, 23 Stanley Benson.
