NSW Buildcorp NRC teams to compete for new bell named after the NSW Waratahs highest capped player, Benn Robinson
Even more pride will be on the line when the three NSW Buildcorp National Rugby Championships (NRC) teams compete against one another with the introduction of a new trophy named after the NSW Waratahs highest ever capped player, Benn Robinson.
‘The Benn Robinson Bell’, introduced by the NSW Waratahs in consultation with the Green and Gold Rugby website, will be up for grabs each time the three NSW teams, the NSW Country Eagles, Western Sydney Rams and Sydney Rays, go head-to-head during the regular season of the Buildcorp NRC tournament.
The teams can win the bell based on a points system explained on the Green and Gold website here.
The NSW Country Eagles and the Western Sydney Rams will compete for the bell this weekend when they face each other in the final regular season round at Concord Oval this Saturday 8 October.
It is a fitting contest as Robinson grew up and played his junior rugby in Dural, a semi-rural suburb in Sydney’s north-west. He is also a shining example of the NSW Rugby pathways, having come through the NSW Under 20s, NSW Schools, and NSW Club program before his esteemed career as a Waratah and Wallaby.
Forced to retire from an eye injury this year, with 155 NSW and 148 Super Rugby caps to his name, Robinson has been a huge influence on and off the field for NSW Rugby at the community and professional levels ever since his debut for his home state back in 2004.
He has since become a natural behind the mic, joining the Fox Sports Australia commentary team for this season’s Buildcorp NRC.
The 32-year-old Waratahs legend said it was a huge honour to have the trophy named after him.
“I am really proud to have the very first NSW Buildcorp NRC trophy named after me, and I would like to thank both the Waratahs and Green and Gold Rugby for the privilege,” Robinson said.
“The Eagles, Rays and Rams have been playing fantastically this season, producing some really exciting rugby. Together they showcase the cross-section of rugby talent in this state, with some standout players coming through.
“There’s nothing better than a derby clash, especially when it’s between the west, city and country. Having the bell to play for will only up the ante in the competiveness of these clashes.
“I am looking forward to seeing which team will be the first to earn the right to ring the bell for the very first time this Saturday.”
The bell will be presented to the winner after this weekend’s round 7 Buildcorp NRC NSW derby match between the Western Sydney Rams and NSW Country Eagles at Concord Oval. Kick-off is at 1:00pm this Saturday 8 October with tickets available at the gate.
