Os an Irish probability.
Cape Town – Former Springbok scrum coach Os du Randt is in negotiations with Ireland to help them at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, starting in September this year.
If results go as expected, Ireland will face the Springboks in the World Cup quarter-final stage.
Du Randt told the Rugby XV website that he’s looking to confirming the move in the near future.
“At the moment I’m still negotiating. It’s difficult to say when it will be confirmed, but hopefully by the next meeting I will have signed,” Du Randt said.
Du Randt is set to join former Springbok forwards coach Gert Smal in Ireland, and together they will form a formidable coaching unit. Smal was the pack mentor when the Boks won the 2007 World Cup, while Du Randt has two World Cup winners’ medals as a player (in 1995 and 2007).
Du Randt is understandably enthused at the prospect of working with Smal again.
“I played many Tests under Gert, he’s a great forwards coach. Many of the things I’ve done as a coach have been based on what he did with us. As a player you never really look and learn completely, but now as a coach in the same environment, I’ll definitely take it all in.
“He’s so meticulous and I’m looking forward to see how he works to achieve his goals. His preparation is always top quality, and that mental prep is so important, especially for smaller sides.”
