Paarl Gimnasium continued their recent dominance over Affies with a 46-19 victory over the Pretoria side in a Premier Interschools match in Paarl on Saturday.

The home side kept Affies scoreless in the second half and ran in seven tries to record their third successive win over the boys from the capital. The last time Affies, who scored three tries on a windy and overcast day in the Boland, managed to beat Paarl Gim was in 2012, while the teams’ 2015 encounter finished 22-22.

Paarl Gim took a 20-19 lead into the halftime break following a competitive first stanza of rugby. Both teams had some magic moments in attack, which featured many delightful offloads and line breaks.

Fullback Tiaan Swanepoel gave Paarl Gim the lead with a penalty in the third minute, before Affies replied with a try by big flank Willie Potgieter just over a minute later.

However, Gim regained the lead soon afterwards when their star SA Schools wing Strevino Jacobs scored a brace of tries in the ninth and 11th minute, respectively. The home side then extended their lead four minutes later when flank Louw Nel scored following a powerful rolling maul by the home side’s forwards.

Affies, though, finished the first half the stronger of the two teams, and managed to reply with two try tries of their own by replacement flank Gustav Bester and flyhalf FC Potgieter respectively before halftime.

However, Affies, who were disrupted by injuries before and during the match, were blown away by Paarl Gim in the second half.

Replacement flank Eric Basson opened the scoring in the second half when he rounded off a flowing Paarl Gim move in the 42nd minute. Nine minutes later it was the turn of hooker Liam Compion to dot down after the home side showed great composure and patience with ball in hand.

Paarl Gim scored two more tries in the final 11 minutes of the Premier Interschools derby, while Affies played the last four minutes with 14 men after hooker Ruben Windell was yellow-carded for repeated infringements.

Inside centre Stephan du Toit went over for Gim in the 59th minute after great support play, while hard-working flank Pierich Siebert scored his own five-pointer two minutes before final whistle.
