Panthers Rugby Club suspended after racial incident
The Golden Lions Rugby Union announced this morning that it’s Anti-Racism and Development Committee convened yesterday afternoon under the Chairmanship of Mr Ayanda Mjekula. Reports of all match officials and chairpersons of the respective clubs were studied and reviewed.
The committee considered allegations of racism against the Panthers Rugby Club (Edenvale), made by the Soweto Rugby Club. After deliberation it was decided that in terms of the mandate of this Committee it has been recommended that the Panthers Rugby Club (Edenvale) and its members be suspended from all GLRU activities with immediate effect.
This will be subject to further and additional actions as all evidence and reports have been submitted to the Unions Disciplinary Committee for further actions and processes around this Committee’s mandate.
The GLRU thus notify all stakeholders that the Panthers Rugby Club and its members are suspended from participating in all rugby matters within the Golden Lions structures as of immediate effect. Further actions may be forthcoming out of the processes of the Disciplinary Committee.
The Golden Lions Rugby Union again states very clearly that it will not tolerate any forms of brutality, hate speech or racism and will take the strongest actions to remove this scourge from our rugby.
A media conference will be held at the conclusion of the disciplinary process but, out of respect for that process, it would be inappropriate for the Golden Lions Rugby Union to make further comment at this time.
